Another member of the U.S. bobsled team is joining the military.
Olympic gold medalist Justin Olsen is enlisting in the New York Army National Guard on Thursday, one day before flying to Europe to resume the World Cup bobsled season.
Olsen is a push athlete for USA-1, which won gold at last year’s Vancouver Games.
His military commitment will not disrupt his bobsled schedule. He will continue pushing the sled piloted by Steven Holcomb for the remainder of the season, then try to move into the driver’s seat of another sled this spring.
Several members of the bobsled program have military ties, including USA-2 driver John Napier. He served in Afghanistan for much of 2010 after competing in the Olympics.
Olsen is from San Antonio.
